Background
Women in rural areas of Uganda face many obstacles when it comes to their menstrual cycles, including access to durable products, stigma surrounding menstruation, and a lack of education. School age girls are particularly affected, as many of them don't know what menstruation is until they begin menstruating. Many school girls in Uganda have poor class participation, lack of concentration, low self-esteem, anxiety and face discrimination when they are menstruating, so they choose to not go to school, which affects their quality of education. There's a big culture of silence surrounding menstruation; mother's don't talk to their daughters about what it is and how a girl should go about dealing with her menstrual cycle.
