Jinja, Uganda
Jinja is a town in southern Uganda with a population of 93,000 people. It's located at the beginning of the Nile River which is a major water source for surrounding communities. Jinja has the second largest economy in Uganda; the major industries include steel-rolling mill, copper smeltery, plywood and tobacco factories, a brewery, a textile factory, large sugar plantations. 350,000 people live in rural communities surrounding Jinja, 49% of which are women. In these rural communities, there is limited access to resources such as water, power, and sanitation services. The average annual household income is estimated to be approximately $100 and many families live in mud homes that are 10 by 15 feet.
